Overview
Heat shields that are directly mounted to the exhaust line are becoming more common due to ever decreasing space in the engine compartment and in diesel applications, the need to maintain high and homogenous exhaust gas temperatures.
The combination of high heat, which reduces the mechanical strength of all metal elements used in heat shields, with the high vibration levels generated by both powertrain and body excitation, which contribute to high stress responses in the heat shield, demand a careful design process supported with numerical simulations and multi-phase testing.
Maintaining a broad database of materials’ thermal, mechanical and environmental properties, allows Lydall’s Product Engineers to select the most appropriate material for the application.
